ISBA and AGBIS announce merged professional association for independent schools

The Boards of the Independent Schools Bursars Association (ISBA) and The Association of Governing Bodies of Independent Schools (AGBIS) are pleased to announce their intention to merge into a professional association for independent schools. From January 2027, the association will champion strategic vision, robust accountability and sustainable business practice, ensuring schools thrive in times of challenge and complexity.

Amanda Webb, Chair of the Board of ISBA, said: “The sector has changed significantly in the past few years, and nowhere is this clearer than in school finance and governance. By aligning great governance, finance and business support, we will provide clear, joined-up expertise and top-quality services for school governing bodies and leadership teams.”

Charlotte Marten, Chair of the Board of AGBIS, said: “This merger brings together unmatched sector insight, equipping independent schools of all types and sizes with vital support in governance, finance, risk and sustainability.”

“Our association will provide the services currently provided by ISBA and AGBIS in a more effective and cost-efficient manner for members and provide a platform to expand business and governance services to the whole independent education sector in the UK and internationally.”

Over the coming months, David Woodgate, Chief Executive of ISBA, and Richard Harman, Chief Executive of AGBIS, will be meeting with members to discuss the plans for our merged association and listen to members’ views.   Members are invited to a webinar on Wednesday 6 May at 9.30-10.30am where we will be setting out our proposal in more depth. Members will receive an email with further details today.
